Together with DNA, carbohydrates and lipids, proteins and peptides are one of the four fundamental classes of macromolecules found in nature. They are essential parts of organisms and participate in virtually every process within a cell. Peptides are molecules having 50 or less amino acid monomers in them, whereas proteins contain one or more of these polypeptides in their structure. Since the landmark research completion of the human genome project in 2001, (Venter JC et al, 2001) the research focus has shifted to identifying the complete set of proteins encoded by a particular genome. “Proteomics”, a term coined by Dr. Marc Wilkins. (Wasinger et al, 1995) is now a field of study in itself.
Identifying and analysis of proteins and peptides encoded in a genome requires purification of these proteins. The process used is preparative liquid chromatography which allows to produce a relatively large quantity of purified proteins for subsequent use. Of the several available purification techniques, reversed phase flash or prep HPLC are the most widely used techniques. Several scientists have published their research (along with the method data) on purification of proteins and peptides using BUCHI chromatography instruments. Below are some examples of highly interesting publications.
